History
Linn County was created by Provisional Legislature on December 28, 1847. The boundaries of Linn County were later altered in 1851 and 1854 with the creation of Lane and Wasco Counties. In 1851 the county seat was moved to Albany and in 1856 a special election reaffirmed Albany as the county seat. Linn County was named for U.S. Senator Lewis F. Linn of Missouri who was the author of the Donation Land Act that gave free land to settlers in the West.
Linn County’s first courthouse was located in the Spaulding School in Brownsville. In 1853, a new courthouse was erected in Albany, but was later destroyed by fire in 1861. A new courthouse was erected in 1865 and was remodeled in 1890 and 1899. The courthouse that still stands today was build in 1940 and is adjacent to the earlier courthouses. From an 18 lane house with league and open bowling, Dick's Pro Shop, the Head Pin Restaurant and the Artesian's Well Lounge, Linn Lanes is a great way to spend an evening. The Bob Smith Memorial Park has three baseball fields, restroom facilities and a small playground area.
Century Park
Century Park is a beautiful place to sit and relax or enjoy some exercise. With a variety of amenities including a ball diamond, 3 tennis courts, and 2 basketball courts, there’s something for every sports enthusiast. The park also includes a fenced toddler playground, as well as another play area for the older children. Sit and relax under the one covered picnic shelter complete with restroom facilities.
Cheadle Lake Recreational Area
The Cheadle Lake Recreational Area offers fishing docks, a boat dock, and benches for visitors and residents alike. This is a great place to join in on a spectacular 4th of July celebration. Ralston Park
The Ralston Park is located along the Santiam Canal and includes five sitting benches, a beautiful rose garden, and a small area on Maple and Park street with a memorial plaque. Relax under the Gazebo and take advantage of the park’s well maintained restroom facilities.
River Park
River Park is the largest park in Lebanon and offers visitors and residents alike a variety of facilities, fields, and trails for their pleasure. River Park offers five raised charcoal cooking grills, a playground, one large covered shelter area with rest rooms, three small picnic tables and one baseball diamond, as well as many open areas that are perfect for playing Frisbee or volleyball. There is also a multi use path that starts at the entrance of the park that travels into the adjacent Gills Landing Park.
Silver Falls State Park
Silver Falls State Park is truly a wonder of nature. Silver Falls State Park is considered to be Oregon’s largest state park with over 22 miles of trails and 10 natural waterfalls.
