History
Although the first settlers arrived in Sweet Home in 1851, the first permanent settlers didn’t arrive until 1852, when Lowell Ames and his family came from the Holley area to start a sawmill. While the valley was known as Sweet Home, the town began with two different names, one end being called Buckhead the other Mossville, which housed the post office and a store. Incorporating in 1893, the first subdivision consisted of four city block and the lots sold for ten dollars each.
Sweet Home’s economy centered around farming, the fur trade, and small businesses, with many logging camps housing families eventually staying on and building homes in the area because of the thriving timber industry. Virtually over night, thanks to the demand for lumber by the defense program in the 1940’s, the once rustic village was transformed, becoming a boom town with logging operations scattered through the area. When construction began on the nearby Green Peter Dam, Sweet Home, instead of remaining isolated, became a new gateway to recreation and industrial activities in East Linn County.
